From the 27th September 2019, Swansea University Basketball Club (SUBC) is taking on a 20-day sports challenge to help raise money towards the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ((NICU) at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow. This will involve the members SUBC participating in a range of sports activities, for which all donations will be split 50/50 between the two organisations.
NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is an intensive care unit that specialises in the care of ill or premature new-borns. Before the birth of a child, the baby depends on the functions of the mother from breathing, eating, removing waste and immune protection. Once a child is born, its body system must change and start functioning independently. For example:
- Lungs need to be able to breathe air
- The digestive system needs to begin to process and excrete waste
- The kidneys need to work towards balancing fluids and chemicals in the body and excrete the waste.
- The cardiac and pulmonary circulation changes
However, premature birth, complications with birth and birth defects can make these changes challenging for a baby. In some cases, a baby can have trouble with these functions after being born. New-born babies who require intensive medical care are often put into the NICU, where there are advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to give special care to these babies. We have chosen to donate towards this at Queens Elizabeth unit because we are touched by the magnificent work the nurses and Doctors do daily. It is also an organisation that is close to heart for one of our senior and committee members here at SUBC.
SWANSEA UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL CLUB (SUBC)
The donations made towards the SUBC will help better the current hardship the club faces financially, it will also allow the continuity of training, official competitive games in the BUCS and social activities. SUBC has a lot of members that rely on the above activities as it helps students decompress from the academic stress of university. Sports increases the overall university experience of a student as they get good physical exercise while being surrounded by a group of diverse and like-minded people.
