East Bergholt High School is a 11-16 school situated midway between Ipswich and Colchester, serving a rural catchment area in Constable Country. The School is currently judged by Ofsted to be "Good". The number of students on roll in the year 2017/18 is approximately 907.
I am a Computing teacher and have been teaching at the school for over 6 years now. I am passionate about teaching in particular STEM and extra curricular activities. I already run several clubs and activities including: Digital Leaders, Esafety Champions, First Lego League, Vex Robotics, The Elite Engineering Programme (EEP), Code Club & BEBRAS challenge.
Every year, the First Lego League team takes part in an inter-school competition. This year, the theme was water-saving devices and the team were discussing prototyping devices themselves. A 3D printer would have given them a real chance in the competition. In the end they opted to make a digital game as they didn't have a way to prototype.
Next year, the theme is space with the title 'Into Orbit' and they'd be able to test their product and see if they could make them, instead of having limited options like they did this year. It would also be a great way to learn more about engineering and prototyping.
You can see the team's video diary from the competition this year here:
But we wouldn't just use it for this competition! If we could buy a 3D printer then we could use it in all Computing and STEM clubs - we could build robots in our Vex Robotics Club! - as well as in lessons. In Computing, we would look at the on-screen design processes, whilst in Design Technology we'd look more at the engineering side of things. And an added bonus: they would have great fun using them!
If we raise our minimum target, we will buy:
1 x UP Mini 2 3D Printer @ £557.99
https://www.rapidonline.com/up-mini-2-3d-printer-25-0055
Credit card fees @ 2%: £11.16
Grand total: £569.15
If we raise more, instead we'll buy: 1 x Robox Duel 3D Printer @ £1,506.00
http://www.techsoft.co.uk/Products/3DPrinting/CELRobox
Credit card fees @ 2%: £30.12
Grand total: £1,536.12
(We prefer this printer because it can print two materials at once! This means it can now create parts which were previously difficult or impossible with a single material printer.)
If we raise even more: we'd love to buy the Robox Duel and some materials to start printing with: http://www.techsoft.co.uk/Products/3DPrintingMaterials/CELRobox
