I'm heading to Indonesia to conduct research with Operation Wallacea on the herbivorous behaviour of reef fish and how this is affected by predators.
I'm Amelia, a student at University of Essex who is completing the MSc Tropical Marine Biology, after graduating from my bachelors in Marine Biology. I have realised I want to pursue a career in fish biology/ecology and conservation, as well as dedicating my time and efforts to saving the ocean!
Fish are a hugely important resource of food to billions of people across the planet. Fish behaviour is drastically altered by the changing environment. As we are encouraging these changes by inflicting damage to the planet, studying behaviour has become vital in understanding how fish communities will change.
By donating money to this project, you will help me achieve my goal of completing my dissertation and providing OpWall, and the Indonesian government with valuable data on herbivorous fish behaviour in the presence of predators and food sources. This is something I am incredibly passionate about and wish to continue throughout my life.
The money goes to Operation Wallacea, who conduct valuable research at many different sites across the world, for which they may publish peer-reviewed papers or send to the governments to assess various different habitats and how to conserve them.
My project requires money for the use of research equipment and facilities e.g. boats, SCUBA equipment, transects, cameras. OpWall are a non-profit organisation therefore rely very heavily on the donations and help from volunteers such as myself.
My expedition requires approximately:
