As maths teachers, modelling solutions at the board is a vital part of our pedagogy. We need to carefully take our students through solutions to problems, helping them to lay out their thinking in a logical, ordered way and developing them into precise and clear mathematicians. However, it means at times we are forced to stand at the board, something which takes us away form using the whole classroom to engage and inspire our students. With a set of iPads, we would be able to move around the classroom as we model our solutions, using the camera on the ipad to display outstanding work on the fly, and even allow students themselves to model their solutions on the whiteboard, all whilst remaining totally mobile.
See the below video to get an idea of how we can link the iPads to the whiteboards using SMART Notebook.
In addition, this set could be used to enhance the classroom experience for our A level Maths and Further Maths students. With the use of powerful graphing software Desmos at their fingertips, they would be able to deepen their understanding, and form vital links between topics by visualizing their problems, developing a fuller mathematical picture without disrupting the flow of the lesson caused by moving students to a computer room, as is currently the case.
See below to get an idea of what Desmos can be used.
We will spend the money on a department set of 6 iPads.
