Nationally we are leading the way with engaging with disabled students - we have 9 out of 12 players on the team with a disability. We started with only 2 disabled players and year on year our numbers have increased. We came 12th out of 14 in our first year, 5th out of 16 in our 2nd year - this year we enter the tournament as Contenders .
We are the Brunel Wheelchair Basketball Team . For this year's University Championships, we need your help to raise money for sports wheelchairs so that we can compete. We don't own any chairs of our own (we currently borrow chairs from the College of Health & Life Sciences and these are not suitable for all our players).
The new chairs will help us to cater for the wide range of disabilities we have in our club, and allow us to continue to grow and recruit more disabled players. We have players with Spina-Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Amputees, knee-replacements and also players with learning difficulties who play alongside their able-bodied friends. The unique thing about wheelchair basketball is everyone can play regardless of ability/disability.
Much like sprint-cycling the set up of the bike makes a huge difference, this is the same in Wheelchair sport.
We have been given a grant by The Lord Taverner's Foundation so we can purchase chairs at a reduced rate £375 per chair rather than £1000 (we will look to fund-raise for more chairs at a later date). We only have 30 days to raise enough money for 3 chairs. If we are able to achieve our target this will not only ensure we can compete on a level playing field with other universities but it will also contribute to the legacy of disability sport at Brunel .
1 Chair = £375
2 Chairs = £750
3 Chairs = £1125
There are also additional costs incurred with taking part in the university league.
This includes :
If we over fund-raise this will go towards the cost of additional chairs.
Select this reward if you just want to donate to the project without receiving a reward.
