Our Project

Christ Church is a two form entry primary school in Lichfield, Staffordshire. We are raising funds to help us develop our skills as coders. As technology is constantly developing and improving, we are looking to provide as many opportunities for our children to explore and deepen their computing understanding. As budgets tighten, we are reaching out to help us gain the equipment we are lacking to really allow the children to learn about coding in a variety of exciting, hands-on ways.

What do we want?

We would like to buy physical programming equipment, the Sphero SPRK+ Robots.

Who is this for?

This is for all the children at Christ Church as the Sphero Robots are so accessible for all ages.

Why do we want it?

Using physical programming equipment allows children to see physically in front of them how things work. It will also provide children with more opportunities to work collaboratively to problem solve and improve communication skills. For our youngest members of the school, Sphero will allow them to explore drawing shapes, writing letters and seeing what the outcome is in real life. With the rubber protective jackets, children will be able to explore Sphero using paint and create their own mini masterpieces using coding - either through drawing, block coding or java script. The Sphero SPRK+ Robots are really diverse. They are app-controlled sphere robots which can be controlled by a variety of different types of coding, allowing children from Reception to Year 6 to develop their coding skills. Children can code using block coding and java script then switch between the two written methods of code – allowing them to edit and improve their coding to deepen their understanding in making it effective. The Sphero SPRK+ can be used across the curriculum; children can explore forces, velocity and acceleration in Science, use coding to create art work using paints and to develop our directional language further. The Sphero SPRK+ is waterproof, scratchproof and has conductive charging – making it perfect for the school environment.

The children from Year 1 have written a letter explaining why they think we need these at our school:


We are writing to you to ask you to think about buying us some Sphero robots for Christ Church. They look really fun and exciting and we would love to have some at our school. They would help us learn lots more about technology and about coding. They can be used for lots of different things like Science experiments and DT. We could build mazes and use the robots to help us get better at our directions. We could even get the special covers and use them to create art work and paintings. We would be able to use them for colour mixing and pattern work. They are waterproof and scratch proof so we could use them in lots of different ways and in lots of different lessons – even outdoors. We know that they are very expensive but we think they would really help all the children get better at Computing at Christ Church. Please could you have a really good think about it.
