San Rafael de Arancibia, Costa Rica
In January 2021, five UMBC students will travel to Costa Rica to facilitate the construction of a water storage tank for 90 people in the San Rafael de Arancibia community. This construction project is projected to cost $15,000.
To make this trip a success, our goal is to raise $5,000 by December 31st.
In January 2019, our assessment trip to San Rafael de Arancibia, Costa Rica was a success! It was the support of 25 generous donors that helped our team raise $2,841. While we fell short of our goal last year, we are confident this year, with your help, we will reach it!
Can we count on your help this year?
We are a student chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA made up of 30 undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines at UMBC.
Our mission is to support community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.
We are undertaking a project in San Rafael de Arancibia, Costa Rica focusing on water access and quality. It will be a multi-phase project, the first phase of which is building a new water tank to replace their current leaking one. This new water tank will benefit the 90 people living in San Rafael who are mostly farmers who grow coffee and vegetables and raise cattle and other livestock!
We have sent students to Costa Rica twice to collect initial design data and meet the community members. The first trip, in May 2018, our assessment team traveled to San Rafael to evaluate issues with the current water system. The team tested the current water quality, inspected the current water supply and treatment systems, mapped the current piping system, and gathered information on undeveloped water sources to develop the design of a solution.
For the second trip in January 2019, the team collected flow rate and GPS data and conducted community surveys to determine how much water the community uses.
These experiences would not have been possible without the support of people like you!
Our goal is to travel to Costa Rica again in January 2021 to complete the construction of a new water storage tank. Funds raised will be used for the following:
Your donation is greatly appreciated and when you share you help us even more! Please share this project with your networks! Sharing our page on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Snapchat will bring more awareness to our campaign! Thank you for collaborating with us to supply water to communities around the world and train next generation of engineering students!
