We want to raise £1430 to buy cameras & equipment for our team to start a vlog which will be used to create our final documentary about the skills gap of females in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM).
The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineers in Europe - as of last year only 9% of UK engineers were women. Organisations such as WISE and the IET are working to address that in balance by advising organisations on how to create environments that will attract women.

Please don’t think this is a description full of dreamy ideas that other people are going to deal with for us. We all need to play our part, and it is imperative that we all review our current way of working and thinking. With our Vlog and given the quality resources we have, its a great opportunity to communicate excitement about the career opportunities that STEM encompasses which will change the world for the better for everyone!
We need a more diverse and talented workforce, and want our Vlog to inform more young people and especially females, to highlight the potential and range of opportunities for them, and why they should aspire to careers and working in STEM.
Currently, we have one camera in the school, and because of our school ban on mobile phones, students have to use the one camera. This is used to record 50 students DT GCSE coursework, these images are then sent off for moderation. This takes a huge amount of time, and as you can imagine - with only one camera the process is much slower and takes even more time for the technician to facilitate.
While the GCSE students use the camera to take photos of their work, another department would also like to use the camera, for example going on a school trip. Of course this causes problems as only one thing can be done at a time!
An extra camera would mean we could lend it to other departments in school.
Needless to say the camera equipment would be an added resource to the school and speed up the process in taking pupils coursework photos which would be of a better quality. Especially as moderators make the assessment on grades from the photos received. As they no longer come into schools to moderate the coursework, taking quality images of coursework is even more essential.
But with more cameras to hand they would also be fully utilised within the school community and other departments would benefit enormously. For example:
For the past few years we've been looking at possible careers that Interest us for the future. However, we have come to realise that there is a decline of females in the STEM sector. Although we noticed that the future generation of females shared a great interest, questions still went through our minds like. Why has the number of women in this industry fallen or, how can we inspire the next generation of girls to go ahead with their dreams even if their work place is male dominated. We would like to create a documentary showing the struggle of females in this industry, finding out the causes of why females aren't encouraged to study subjects such as engineering. So with the funding we receive we would like to buy cameras in order to start vlogging parts of our journey research. Having a camera will impact us by being able to record our own personal journey.
Katrine-Oriane Wandji : Although I really enjoy STEM subjects, I also have a sentiment towards sports. I enjoy playing sports such as squash and netball and have been appointed to be the netball captain against other schools in my borough. I also enjoy doing drama. I am a member of the hackney French youth theatre where I have performed and played in many productions.
Hanah Rahman: I'm Hana Rahman and one day my dream is to become an Architect. Imagine.... Hana Rahman building the tallest skyscraper in the world! The one thing I love to do is daily vlog, I've been wanting to start my own YouTube Channel for a while and hopefully soon I will pursue the YouTube industry. I love doing accents and impressions and my favourite accent to do is an Australian - my family love it when I do it! Making people laugh and smile is what I'm made to do and, I know how to make someone’s day when they are feeling down. I'm all about bringing positivity to the table as positivity is the key to happiness!
Michelle Mentu: I’m Michelle, I'm normally described as a very happy person but also perceive my bad jokes as funny. I'm very musical and I play 5 instruments, piano, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, ukulele and I sing sometimes. I think the most interesting thing about me is that when I was younger I used to be scared of butterflies and moths. I also love hula hoops crisps.
Emaan Hussain: I'm Emaan and I am 14 years old. For my GCSE’s I chose history, Computer science, DT and RE. My favourite subject in school is probably Design Technology. In the future I aim either want to pursue a career in law, engineering, architecture or maybe even interior design! In my free time read as many books as possible and love the Harry Potter series and Hunger Games trilogy. I strongly believe the decline of women in the STEM industry is discouraging for young girls and that is the reason I decided to join this project along with my friends.
Audrey Fidegnon: I'm Audrey and I’m 15 years old. I enjoy rowing, athletics and swimming and I hope one day I can compete professionally for my country in rowing. My favourite subjects are English, Design and Technology, History and Physics. Politics and parliament are two topics which I am very interested in. Ever since I became engrossed in STEM, the lack of females within the industry and other industries has always been very prominent, which is why I became involved in this project. I feel that the younger generation must tackle these issues and this is the perfect way to do it. Also, I love food and cooking: and anything that links in with innovation, design and creativity!
