'Psychologists for Sanctuary' is a crowdfunding project from two psychologists to assist Swansea University in supporting students who have experienced the trauma of leaving their home to seek asylum in Wales.

Who are we?

We are Gabriela Jiga-Boy and Alex Jones, both lecturers in the Psychology Department at Swansea University. And right now, we are training very hard for the 21k race on June 23rd.

Our story

None of us had to run from a war zone and settle in a place totally unknown. As academics, we both had to adapt to new contexts - because that’s a natural academic path, not because we needed to stay alive. None of us had to leave our home, friends, family and normal life behind. None of us had to give up the job we passionately love, in exchange for safety. But some people need to do all of the above.

Where will the money go?

We are asking for your help for Swansea University’s Student Hardship fund, with a particular focus on those students who have experienced the trauma of leaving their home to seek asylum in Wales. There are asylum seekers and refugees studying at the University (and indeed potential students) who need financial support. Let’s help them feel welcome not just with kind words, but with practical things, such as money for accommodation or living expenses. Once we hit the target, the money will go in the Student Hardship fund. We will then work with Swansea University to help narrow down an efficient way of finding out who needs help and how we can get to them.

Rewards

We can offer you the coolest things:

1. A BIG thank you for your help;

2. Some fun updates about how hard we've trained every week (ok, but be kind, we're academics, not athletes!);

3. An opportunity to ask us what we, as psychologists, know about how we can make the world more egalitarian and fair (we promise well-researched answers).
