Our project is to develop and eventually embed the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality within the curriculum and across the whole school. Pupils currently have access to one set of VR goggles and the use of 3 iPods for both AR and VR. You can imagine the time spent waiting for a turn (if the day doesn’t end before you get your chance!)
We would use the set of iPods with the Digital Leaders (10 pupils from Years 4 to 6) in the first instance and then they would help to lead and deliver an AR/VR development day for all of the staff and pupils to participate in.  The kit can then be ‘booked’ by classes for use across the curriculum and some of the many other features and apps could be utilised by small groups of pupils. We, as a school, are very fortunate to be in the surrounding area of ‘Tech City’ and pupils are made aware of the opportunities which this entails for their future. They have dedicated Computing lessons led by myself, and they show drive and enthusiasm in all that they do. We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of 10 Digital Leaders, these being pupils who applied for, were interviewed and were successful in demonstrating both their own skills but also how they can help others. These pupils would play a key role in sharing the project across the school.

We, the pupils and staff want to buy a set of iPod touch (ideally 7) to be used alongside the 3 iPod touch which we already have. Alongside this we would like a set of 10 VR goggles and 10 Bluetooth controllers to be used in conjunction with the iPods. Our final purchase would be a multi USB charger to enable the devices to be charged safely in a classroom environment.

There are many uses for the iPods which we would like to buy but the major consideration is that they can be used to support learning using both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

The pupils themselves age from two to eleven years of age and a large proportion of them do not speak English as their first language. Additionally, many of the pupils may not have access to the sights and sounds outside of their immediate locale and we are located in an area with a high level of deprivation.

Computing has been delivered as a specialist subject in the school for the last three years and we have seen a dramatic change in the technologies available to support teaching and learning. Although pupils have a dedicated Computing lesson each week the intention is for these sessions to flow with the topics and subjects being taught across the curriculum by their regular class teacher. It is important however, to ensure that Computing is not seen as a stand-alone subject by class teachers and to encourage and support them with embedding tech in their own lessons.

As a school with a high level of deprivation and with many pupils for whom English is not the home language, pupils may not have the opportunities to experience a wide range of social and cultural activities. Additionally, the potential language barrier plays a role in the depth of understanding of new vocabulary for example.

AR and VR support the different learning styles of pupils. As a school, we currently have three iPods for use by pupils and one set of VR goggles to use with them. The numbers of pupils who have access to AR and VR is therefore restricted. The extra iPods would provide a set of ten which is far more acceptable for use with whole class teaching.

As a school community, we are expecting there to be an impact in several ways:
• Pupils will be engaged in their learning and can take ownership of it;
• Pupils will have a greater understanding of the key vocabulary or concepts for a topic or theme
• Pupils can experience places and sights outside of their location, their country or even in Space
• Pupils will be encouraged to develop their own AR/VR content
