about us

We are The Open University Psychological Society (OUPS). We are a volunteer-run student society helping to support OU Psychology students both academically and socially throughout the course of their studies, as well as after graduation.

We run a number of weekend courses throughout the year, including revision workshops, method workshops and an annual conference. Our aim is to offer something for everyone, no matter what your circumstances or level of study.

We want to raise between £300 and £3000 to provide a 'hardship fund' to provide fully subsidised places at our weekends, for those who would otherwise not be able to benefit.

The problem

The weekend courses that we run help to provide a foundation for those studying psychology courses by introducing key concepts and methods in psychology and providing a good framework for their studies. We have a series of seminars and talks from OU tutors throughout the weekends which are designed to help address important aspects of the course.

However, our weekends are not all about study! They are fun, social occasions designed to provide the social interactions that OU students can miss out on due to the nature of distance learning, and all of our weekends have a full programme of social events.

We have found that many people really do appreciate the chance to mix with other students, and to share experiences and frustrations, as well as give each other motivational support. These social events also give students the chance to meet and chat with some of the course tutors and eminent psychologists who come to speak.

However, whilst we aim to keep the costs of our weekends to an absolute minimum the weekends are, unfortunately, still beyond the means of some that would benefit greatly from attending. This is particularly the case for those that need the assistance of a dedicated carer, as they would need to pay for two places.

This is where we need your help.

We would like to raise up to £3000 to provide up to 10 fully subsidised places at our weekends.

We have made every effort over the years to increase the accessibility of our weekends, by videotaping sessions and providing online material, but this is not a substitute for actually attending the weekends in person, and meeting other students and academics.

OUPS has unfortunately not been untouched by the widespread changes to things like tuition fees and OU course structures, and we no longer have the funds available to subsidise places for those who really need it.

How will your donations help?

For every £300 raised, we will be able to provide a free place on one of our weekends.

The courses are held at Warwick University, and the cost of the place includes all accommodation, meals, tuition, handouts and social events.

Your support will allow a student who would greatly benefit from the weekend to attend, and not only get the chance to develop their understanding of course materials, but also meet and engage with other OU students and academics, making their distance learning journey a little less lonely.

Students form lifelong friendships through OUPS weekends, which really helps them enhance their OU learning experience. Please help us to give this chance to those who might otherwise miss out.

Help us succeed!

We would be so incredibly grateful if you can support our project with a donation. But, you don't just have to give money to help us succeed! Please share this project with anyone you think would support us – on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, by email, telephone, in a chat over the fence or on your blog. In fact, share it with everyone you know as we think it's a great idea to help more people benefit from these incredibly valuable weekends. The more people who know about it, the more people we can support. And we know we said you don't need to give money to help us, but we'd love it if you did! Please sponsor us and help make this happen.
