SOAS is proud to announce the inaugural Festival of Ideas, which this year will be held virtually. This year’s theme is Decolonising Knowledge. Tickets to all events and talks are free of charge, but we would be grateful if you would consider donating to support the Festival. Donations will enable us to pay our contributors and ensure the future of the Festival for years to come.
The SOAS Festival of Ideas: Decolonising Knowledge marks an institution-wide commitment to decolonising education and looks toward the future direction of the School under its incoming Director, Professor Adam Habib. In particular, it will highlight the School’s unique and growing identity as a place for decolonising history, including its own.
The Festival will engage with the following eight themes, which underpin the exciting research taking place at SOAS and highlight our ongoing public engagement:
The festival includes panel discussions, masterclasses (from theatre and poetry to scriptwriting and publishing), keynote lectures, student-led installations and a public debate for/against on Decolonising Knowledge. We are also hosting a verbatim performance by Bhuchar Boulevard on Decolonising Not Just a Buzzword, capturing SOAS conversations about the need to decolonise its imperial mission.
Tickets to all events at the Festival are free of charge. Many of the contributors from outside of SOAS are volunteering or receiving minimal payment in return for their time and expertise.
With your support we can increase the amount we are giving to our contributors and help to fund future festivals.
The festival has been developed in response to the School’s Decolonising Vision and works closely with the SOAS Decolonising Working Group. The working group helps to fund community engagement and has developed a world leading Learning and Teaching Toolkit. Our aim is to contribute toward a public debate on Higher Education as an inclusive space by reviewing our structures and implementing sustainable practices that address inequalities.
