Ivor Powell Scholarships are given to individuals who are pursuing dual-careers as students and elite athletes. Some will use the funds to get them to and from competitions or to training, or they may use the funds to avoid having a part-time job while training and studying.
Some Scholars use the funds to pay for equipment. A Modern Pentathlete like Joe Choong could easily spend between £1,800 and £5,000 on equipment for each of the five sports they compete it.
Wow! Thanks to a very generous gift from Gary Lilley (Bsc Economics 1992), there's been a huge boost to the fundraising effort. Each gift, up to £3,000, will be matched by Gary, bringing us so much closer to our target of £6,000.
Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated. Please continue to share with your networks and help us reach £6,000. Your gifts and support will help us to support students like Joe Choong to Tokyo 2020!
“What a man and what an inspiration he was. I still find it humbling that someone who achieved so much in football playing and managing at the highest levels could display so much enthusiasm for a university team! But that was Ivor. The Ivor Powell Sports Scholarship is a fitting tribute to someone who contributed so much to the University’s sporting life for so many years. Long may it continue!”
