At Penketh High School in Warrington, all staff are passionate about supporting the pupils we are privileged to teach, helping them strive for success in all that they do. We want all our pupils to dare to dream about exciting futures built on an ambition, to be the best that they can be and a desire to persevere within a supportive and happy environment. Our school offers an open and collaborative culture and a willingness to listen and involve all stakeholders as well as a desire to develop dynamic partnerships that create and enhance opportunities for our young people.

What do you want?

@SparkPenketh is the UK’s first makerspace within a state school at Penketh High School , weaving maker education into our curriculum. We believe in providing students with diverse, rich learning environments in which the creativity of the student as a “maker” can flourish. We want to provide pupils with the opportunity to develop their ideas within the curriculum and outside the classroom with industry leaders and makers in the community so that learning is student centred and project driven.

We therefore need tools and resources;

  • Electronics for physical computing
  • Handtools
  • VR/AR kit
  • 3D Printers
  • Laser cutter

Who is this for?

Our whole school across all curriculum areas including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT, DT, Art, Drama, History, Geography P,E PHSE, Maths, English, MFL and all life skills. We intend on having a "maker" project in each area in our first year. We have currently 10 projects planned with makers form the community. We plan however to OPEN SOURCE all our final teaching resources for ALL schools and produce a School Makerspace Curriculum Guide as a FREE eBook.

Why do you want it?

To create a context that develops the Maker mindset, a growth mindset that encourages us to believe that we can learn to do anything which allows us to design and develop learning programmes in a variety of community contexts in order to serve a diverse group of learners who may not share access to the same resources.

We want to develop programs for young people that allow them to take a leading role in their learning and create the community context for the exhibition and curation of students work. This will enable them to build a record of participation, which can be useful for academic and career advancement as well as advance their sense of personal development.

In addition, we want to develop educational contexts that link the practice of making to formal concepts and theory within the National Curriculum and support discovery and exploration while introducing new tools for advanced design and new ways of thinking about learning.

Finally, we want to foster in each student the full capacity, creativity and confidence to become agents of change in their personal learning.
