The University of Manchester Musical Theatre Society (UMMTS) is only in its seventh year and yet has quickly grown into an extremely open, friendly and award-winning society, passionate about all aspects of musical theatre. We pride ourselves in providing a platform for aspiring musical theatre creatives to put on professional-level productions, as well as a safe space to socialise with other enthusiasts and convert the masses!
We produce four large-scale musicals a year plus numerous concept showcases. Our larger productions often reach around 350 students either creatively or as audience members.
Unfortunately, due to renovations at the Students' Union Building this year, UMMTS is no longer able to access a free performance space large enough to house our productions. " The show must go on ", but the cost of renting out an external space has greatly affected the society financially. Subsequently we are turning to YOU, our wonderful supporters, to help keep UMMTS creating!
UMMTS is attempting to raise a whopping £900 to pay for the venue for our first production this semester whilst the SU is under refurbishment. Musicals are an expensive venture and after buying props, costumes, lighting and sound, our expected revenue from the performances wont cover a building as well!
UMMTS's first production in our new external space is The Clockmaker’s Tale , our first piece of new writing composed by our very own Alastair McNamara.
This original musical is a mythical retelling of a legend that is still told on the streets of Prague today. The story follows the rise and fall of Gregor, a charismatic clockmaker from the ghettos of Medieval Prague, and his tragic love affair with Jana, the mayor’s daughter. The script fuses the farcical fun of storytelling with the tragedy of an epic story, whilst weaving in elements of myths and legends from Prague’s long and bloody history. Pulling together influences from Klezmer, Medieval church music and cinematic fairytale scoring, the music instantly transports the audience to another time.
Working on a new musical has been an extremely enriching experience for the cast and creatives involved in the production. The opportunity to put on professional standard productions during university is an experience like no other and has inspired many of our members to seek out a career in musical theatre once leaving the University. UMMTS reaches more and more students each year and with a few donations, the society can continue to grow and inspire all those keen to get involved.
We have a few rewards to give out to our wonderful donors so make sure you check them out!
