Over the last four years our trained student volunteers have directly saved the lives of 11 people, reaching the scene even before the ambulance, and resuscitating the patient. We've also helped thousands of others in potentially life threatening emergencies. Every year our volunteers provide vital medical care to more and more people. But now we need some help just to be able to continue this great service we provide.
Over the next three years we need to raise £17,000 to pay for the lease of our two new Community First Responder cars. This will allow our scheme to continue to help the community of Nottingham. Without the extra funding our scheme will be unable to operate in the future.
The good news is that if we can manage to raise at least £1,000 through this Jumpstart page, it will unlock an extra £9,000 in the form of a Cascade grant - supported by donations from alumni and friends of the University.
Can you help us achieve our fundraising target, and allow us to continue our good work well into the future?
We are a group of approximately 50 trained volunteers (all students of the University of Nottingham) who act as an additional resource to the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Using two cars and specialist equipment, we provide emergency care to patients suffering from a variety of serious and life-threatening illnesses and injury. We attend 999 calls anywhere within the East Midlands, but the vast majority of our responses are within a few miles of the Nottingham and Derby Medical Schools.
Our volunteers have a real impact on the lives of every patient they meet within our community.
Since our inception in 2014 we have attended over 3000 incidents and at over half of these our responders have arrived before the ambulance. This doesn't mean we are a replacement for the regular ambulance service in any way, but it has meant the patient has received the vital emergency care they needed, quicker than it would have otherwise arrived. The 999 calls we attend are extremely varied but have included:
172 Cardiac Arrests (when the patient has no pulse and has stopped breathing)
513 Medical Emergencies – such as Seizures
774 Chest Pain/Cardiac Complaints
474 Unconscious Patients
723 Breathing Difficulties
306 Traumatic Injuries and Falls
510 ‘Other’ incidents such as Strokes, Sepsis, Overdoses, Hangings and House Fires.
Since 2014, 11 of our responders have been officially recognised by the ambulance service for the critical role they played in resuscitating a patient. That's 11 patients whose hearts were restarted thanks to the lifesaving work of our responders and the ambulance crews that they work with.
Unfortunately this year the lease on our cars runs out. If we do not secure the funds necessary to lease two new cars the scheme will cease to operate. This will mean we are no longer able to continue providing the community with the life saving resource they so desperately need.
All of the money raised in this crowdfunding campaign will go towards the lease of two new Community First Response cars over the next three years. These will be two Skoda Octavia cars, marked as our vehicles. Over the course of three years the lease will be £17,000.
