The Live-In Labs project is a unique programme run by Amrita University. The programme aims to find innovative and sustainable solutions to day-to-day problems faced by the rural communities based around Kerala, Southern India.
The programme runs projects in the areas of Health and Livelihood, Education and Technology, Environment and Farming, Energy and Infrastructure, and Basic Facilities. Students will be involved with all aspects of the projects; from researching on campus to delivering the solutions in the field.
We are five students from The University of Manchester's School of Materials, ranging from first years to third years. We are studying different subjects and come from a range of different cultures and places, but are very excited to be joining together to work on this programme. Following on from the success of the first trip last year, we are looking to further strengthen the link between The University of Manchester and Amrita University.
Following an interview and selection process, we have been assigned to a variety of different projects relating to our current academic studies. Some of the projects we will be working on include:
These projects represent just a small fraction of the involvement between Amrita University and its local communities. All of the projects involve the theme of sustainability, something which is crucial to the long-term success of a modern rural community. We will be hoping to use and expand upon the knowledge gained in our courses to contribute towards the ongoing success of the projects.
By donating, you will not only be helping to improve the quality of life in the rural communities, but also in our professional and academic development, as we gain skills and experience in the world of work. We will be living and working alongside locals and getting to know their customs and lifestyle on a day-to-day basis. This gives us the opportunity to experience a completely different way of life in unfamiliar surroundings, and this in itself represents a unique chance for personal development.
The project runs for a considerable period of time (2nd July-31st August), so we have little time and a lot to raise! As students, we will be extremely grateful for anything you can contribute to our cause.
Expenses per person associated with this trip include:
Any extra funds will be donated towards the completion of the projects.
We have some great rewards planned for your generous pledges, check them out!
