Being mentally 'unfit' is not just a poor state of mind that one has to learn to deal with. It is about the events that you have missed because you were not able to control the food served. It is about the crowded places you have started to avoid because those make you feel anxious. It is about all the shifts that you could not finish because you felt like you could not breathe anymore. It is about all the days that you had to count actions and objects just to feel safe. It is about missing life and so much more.
I'm taking on The Great York Walk, a 20km half marathon walking event that will help to transform mental health by raising funds for Mentally Fit York at the University of York. Mental ill-health doesn't discriminate and whether we're experts in mental health or not, we should all be able to feel safe and supported in talking to each other about our mental health.
So together with a great community of people - some with a connection to York, some with no connection - I'm going to walk 20km on the 28th May around York!
Please donate anything you can to help my target and improve mental health in York and beyond! :) (P.S. If you want to find out more about the walk and the cause you can do so here)
My walk will be in aid of Mentally Fit York, which will promote good mental health on a local, national and international scale. Your support will be used to fund initiatives such as 24/7 mental health support for York students and research projects to further our understanding of mental health issues and the barriers to accessing support services.
Your support may also go towards providing suicide prevention training, Mental Health Nursing Scholarships or it could contribute to a range of other initiatives which are decided by an expert panel of mental health and wellbeing researchers, practitioners and advocates. Find out more about what Mentally Fit York has supported here.
