Summary

Three of our amazing teachers are taking to the Thames on Saturday 1st July to take part in the Suunto Great London Swim! They are each swimming the length of 1 mile, hoping to raise enough money to buy chrome books for every child in year 5 as well as trolleys to accommodate them. We, as a school, are committed to providing the best education for our children and we are aware that the use of technology throughout the curriculum has a substantial impact on children's learning and engagement.

Our School

We are a three form entry Junior school based in Hornchurch, Essex. Our children's ages range from 7 to 11 and they are mixed. We teach children from a diverse range of backgrounds and ethnicities and our outstanding staff are committed to providing a well-rounded and challenging education in a very happy, purposeful environment, preparing them to achieve their absolute best for their future.

Our Project

Our aim is to raise enough money to go towards providing every child in Year 5 with their own chrome book for use in school. We have already provided our Year 6 pupils with chrome books and have found them to have had a profound effect on teaching and learning, pupil progress and pupil engagement. Chrome books are used on a daily basis in Year 6 for Maths and English activities on programs such as RM easi, Mathletics and Education City (to name a few!).

We have also rolled out the use of Google Classroom throughout the school, where each child has access to a virtual learning platform within the safety of the school network. Through Google Classroom, children can receive assignments from their teachers online and submit work back through it from anywhere they have access to the internet! Children also have their own G-suite where they have access to their own gmail account, Google SafeSearch for research, Google Forms where they can create surveys; they can also work collaboratively with other children on Google versions of word documents and PowerPoints as well as creating their own websites. Only a few of the apps available to children on Google Classroom are mentioned above but this is really taking teaching and learning to a whole new level!

Ardleigh Green has also taken part in a national coding/maths project this year with UCL Institute of Education and Sheffield Hallam University and the use of the chrome books in Year 6 has made the teaching of maths through coding so much easier as the chrome books turn on and off quickly, keep power for hours and are small enough to fit in children's trays so they have access to them throughout the day without wasting precious time! These seemingly small things have made a very big difference! Children have been able to create their own individual projects whilst still easily working together to help each other out.

Overall, as their use has had such a positive impact on the learning and engagement of our Year Six children, we are determined to try to raise as much as we can to provide them for our Year Five children (and the rest of the school in the future!) as well!
