Isle of Wight
I'm raising £3500 to open a printmaking studio on the Isle of Wight that will be open to the public.
I'll be running short and longer workshops in printmaking as well as hiring out the facilities to individuals who have completed a short course to work on their own projects.
Create will be based at the popular Rectory Mansion (the old Waxworks building) in Brading on the Isle of Wight.
I'm Sara and I'm an illustrator and designer based on the Isle of Wight specialising in printmaking.
I have a Foundation Degree in Graphic Design, a BA (hons) degree in Visual Arts and I'm currently studying for a Masters in Visual Communication at Southampton Solent University.
I am also involved in two small businesses on The Isle of Wight. I am part of a co-operative called Luscious Little Things, we run monthly evening craft workshops in a bar/cafe where we teach anything from papercutting crafts, jewellery making and easy printing techniques.
I'm also half of a successful twice yearly craft market called I Love Wight. We organise markets for Isle of Wight makers, producers and artists to showcase and sell their work. Our current home is The Garlic Farm . We regularly are over-subcribed with people wanting a stall and have over 500 visitors a day through the market.
I specialise in printmaking as my art practice and currently as I'm studying at Solent University, I have some great printmaking facilities to use whenever I like. Unfortunately on the Isle of Wight where I live there are no publicly accessible printmaking facilities. As well as myself, there are over 100 artists registered with Isle of Wight Arts. In a recent survey I undertook, 88% of respondents said they would like to see printing workshops on the Isle of Wight and a further 56% said they'd like an open access print space where they can work on their own projects.
In addition to the local residents, the Isle of Wight has more than it's fair share of tourists contributing an estimated £286m annually to the local economy (Isle of Wight Tourism Monitor 2012/13).
The Create printmaking studio will be based in a popular venue for both residents and tourists giving great exposure to both workshops and the space.
Workshops would be available in: lino printing, card cut printing, monoprinting, dry point etching, handmade screen printing along with practical applications for these methods such as lino printed gift tags, screen printed fabric etc.
There will also be workshops for children such as: safe lino printing, wrapping paper making and seasonal crafts.
If I reach my full target the money will go on the following
£2,100 on an etching press
£200 on rollers, cutters, inking guns and bench blocks
£450 on inks and paper
£500 on furniture (tables, chairs, cabinets etc.)
£250 on public liability insurance
If I just reach my minimum target I will be able to buy all of the equipment needed except the etching press.
There will of course be great rewards for all the lovely people who sponsor this project.
