We are a student chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA made up of undergraduate and graduate students from many different disciplines at UMBC. We are planning a water supply project to be implemented in Cedral, Costa Rica next year. This project will give students a chance to practice defining the scope of a problem with input from all stakeholders, and designing engineering solutions for long-term sustainability. Funds raised will provide opportunities for UMBC students to travel abroad and make an impact by helping a community meet their water needs. It will also give students resources to enrich their educational experiences.
Our assessment team, will be travelling this summer (2018) to Cedral to evaluate issues with the current water system. The team will test current water quality, inspect current water supply and treatment systems, map the current piping system, and gather information on undeveloped water sources to develop the design of a solution. This trip will give students valuable hands-on experience in land surveying, water sample collection, and water quality testing. The team will also engage with the community members to determine their available resources and most pressing water needs in order to design a system that will be used and maintained by the community after the project is completed. This project will give students a chance to practice defining the scope of a problem with input from all stakeholders and designing engineering solutions for long-term sustainability.
Engineers Without Borders welcomes students from all disciplines. Aside from working on our international project, we volunteer in the local community, partnering with organizations like Blue Water Baltimore, the Maryland SPCA, and Habitat for Humanity Maryland. We do outreach on campus with many other organizations. We hope to grow more in during the upcoming year, to do more volunteering in local schools, and to inspire the next generation of engineers.
Funds raised will be used to fund upcoming trips to the community. The implementation trip, when the finalized design will be installed, is projected to cost $15,000. Fundraising efforts are starting now to allow the chapter to focus on the technical aspects of the project during the upcoming design phase.
Four students, accompanied and supervised by engineering mentors, are expected to travel for the assessment trip this summer. Below is a sample from the assessment trip budget for an estimation of how much a trip to Cedral costs:
● Water quality sampling supplies: $25
● Water quality test kits: $50 per kit
● In-country food and water: $55 per person per day
● In-country transportation and translation: $140 per day
● Round trip flights: $600 per person
Our biggest goal is to engineer a solution with this community, not for them. Your support will increase our capacity to become globally responsible leaders.

Our student members attend Involvement Fest every semester, a table fair designed to recruit new members. We also plan monthly volunteering events to help build a strong sense of community within the team.
