A short summary of our project

We are aiming to raise funds to help support a local village women's vocational school on our trip to Ghana. The funds will help them to build a suitable toilet and bathroom which is very vital to provide a safe environment for the students. The funds will also be used to buy other equipment such as Sewing machines and etc.

The African Caribbean Society (ACS) and Ghanaian Society (GS) at the De Montfort Students Union are taking 12 students on this trip to Ghana as part of the # DMUGlobal Scheme. The trip will give the students a greater understanding on the Ghanaian culture. The students will have an opportunity to help and volunteer also.

Your story

This year the ACS and the Ghana society decide to organize their first student led trip to Ghana and identified some areas that we could help. The St Michael's Vocational School was set up for the people of the Pramso in 1993 by a Dutch medical doctor.

Due to the high poverty rate in the area, parents are not always able to support their children financially to go to school and as such, some drop out to find that there is no jobs out there for them which lead to a hard challenging life. The aim or mission of the school is to help develop the youth of Pramso and the surrounding areas to acquire vocational skills to help them get jobs in the future.

The school was set up with the goal of engaging the youth so that they have the opportunity to develop employable skills which they can use to enrich their future.

The school started with 6 girls in 1993 and has since then equipped many girls with skills in catering, fashion design and many more. The school currently has 60 students.

We are hoping to add to the history of this great school to have better facilities so they can help more people in the area.

They submitted the letter below to let us know how we can help them.

We hope to raise at least £1700 for the vocational school and have already received £1000 from a collaborated musical play called Gospel Jam. We hope you can help us raise the remaining £700.

We hope to help make a positive impact to the lives of the students at the school and your donations will help us achieve that.

Where will the money go?

Because we already have £1000 to be used for the bathroom renovation, the money raise will go to the following.

  • As seen from the list,  £480 will go towards toilet renovations
  • £300 towards sewing machine and cake mixer

Should we raise more than requested, We have a number of groups we will be visiting in Ghana that we will donate to:

PCR- They are a new charity that help educate young children in low income communities that don't receive good literacy skills in school. They have requested donations to help purchase more reading books and set up libraries in these areas.

Accra Psychiatric Hospital- Some students will be visiting the hospital while we are in Ghana. We will donate some funds to this hospital to help buy toiletries for the patients admitted.
