The holiday season will soon be with us and we want to make sure that every student that may not have a family to go home to, receives a gift from their Brunel family. With the help of Brunel staff and friends, we are aiming to provide a small holiday gift, packed full of festive treats, to our students who are Care Leavers or Estranged from their parents.

Brunel Senior Leadership members generously made individual donations during Care Leavers Week to get our fundraiser to £1000. Now we are hoping with the help of all staff, we can reach £2500. A donation of any amount will help us provide a festive bag full of holiday cheer for these fantastic students to let them know that we are thinking of them during Christmas and the festive period!

Research has shown that

  • Half of Care Leavers consider dropping out of university due to a mix of health problems, money worries, high workloads and personal and family issues.
  • 33% of Estranged Students were affected by homelessness before they started studying.
  • 1 in 5 Care Leavers say they feel lonely all or most of the time, compared to 1 in 10 young people in the general population

What does Brunel do to support these students?

Throughout the year, Brunel offers a comprehensive support package to our students who are Care Leavers or estranged from their parents. A dedicated point of contact in the Student Support and Welfare team coordinates tailored support for each student, including financial support, wellbeing workshops and professional development opportunities. You can find out more about the support that Brunel offers here.

And they need our support over the festive period!

The Christmas and holiday period can be extremely challenging for people who have left care or become estranged from their family. For students with nowhere to go over the winter break, who may not receive gifts, or don't have the support of a family network, it can be especially lonely, and this feeling is exacerbated when friends and flatmates return home for Christmas. We want to let these students know that Brunel is their family and they are not forgotten. We cannot underestimate how special it feels to be remembered, particularly at Christmas.

Where will the money go?

We are aiming to provide a minimum of 75 gift bags in time for the winter break, filled with festive treats and cheer.

Every single penny will be spent on providing gifts to our students. If we receive enough donations where we go beyond our target we will increase the volume and/or quality of the gifts.

Please donate, encourage others and have a good festive break!
