Leicester Children’s Hospital School comprises 4 main centres; Leicester Royal Infirmary (EYFS to Key Stage 4), Willowbank Day School (Key stages 3 and 4), Coalville Hospital (Mental health patients: Key stages 3 and 4) and Outreach (EYFS to Key Stage 4). All bases provide education for students who are unable to access education in their own school for medical reasons. Although the population of the school is variable, on average 40% of our students are eligible for free school meals.
We would like to provide our students with access to practical science lessons by filming science practicals, to enable them to complete their GCSEs in line with their mainstream peers. However, in order to do this, we need to purchase equipment which would allow for the effective video editing and publishing of the demonstrations in a timely manner.
Many children who attend the Leicester Children's Hospital School have not, out of necessity, been regular attenders of mainstream school. Due to their absences, these children have significantly fewer practical skills in the science setting than their peers and this, combined with a lower self-confidence, results in them being greatly disadvantaged as they progress through school life and onto GCSEs. The required practical aspect of the GCSEs is very hard for some of our students to access. This could be due to many reasons, for example; hospitalisation, mental health issues, hypersensitivity or home tuition.
Whilst we have an active programme to allow students across the four bases of the hospital school to have access to practical science, setting up and running the GCSE required practicals in a hospital or Outreach setting is not viable which puts our students taking GCSEs at a huge disadvantage. Recording the practical aspects to allow the students to encounter these practicals in video format improves their chances of gaining a science GCSE. We have a variable number of GCSE students on role in the hospital school at any time, but on average we would expect to see 50 GCSE science students per year across all four bases.
