Bringing Books to the Gambia
Lord Williams’s School has a very strong link with Brikama Upper Basic
School in The Gambia, West Africa. Students and teachers visit each year and
several members of BUBS staff have spent time in lessons at Lord Williams’s School.
The current situation regarding the library at the school is dire. The building is in an appalling condition - the windows are broken, the ceiling is falling down, the electricity source is dangerous and the sanitation is unhealthy. The few books which are in the library are in a poor condition and very out of date. During the rainy season, the roof and windows leak thus ruining the books so that they are unusable. They are always covered with dust and are damp.
Our appeal is to repair the building, then replace the books. Children of Brikama Upper Basic School love going to school. We want them to be inspired to learn in a room which is safe, clean and appropriate to encourage them to learn.
Who are we?
Lord Williams’s School is a thriving and popular comprehensive school,
based in South Oxfordshire we serve the Thame community and its surrounding
rural area. We are a split-site school, with Years 7 – 9 on the Lower School
site at Towersey Road and Years 10 – 13 on the Upper School site at Oxford
Road. We pay particular attention to each individual student by promoting their
personal, social and educational development to enable all to achieve at the
highest level possible. As a result of our continuing success, Lord
Williams’s School is consistently oversubscribed.
Where will the money go?
We are fundraising to help redevelop the library at Birkama
School in The Gambia. All of the funds raised will be used to help rebuild
the library and develop a fantastic safe resource for the school and students.
