OUR PROJECT (& new stretch targets!)

Newstead Wood is a very successful girls secondary school in Orpington. Our students are highly motivated and love learning. Unfortunately we are facing a time of acute financial pressure so need your help to develop our resources for teaching and learning!

We want to buy seven classroom visualisers for our seven English classrooms. All students at Newstead Wood study English up to age 16 and a substantial number continue to study the subject at A Level. Every week our talented and hardworking team teach for 120 hours in our English classrooms, working with almost 900 young people.

Why would visualisers make a difference in the classroom?

A visualiser is essentially a camera which hooks up to the classroom PC and projector and can stream anything to the big screen.

We love our screens in English and use presentation software all the time, but we also love books and writing on paper. Books are very much a one-to-one medium... but using a visualiser allows them to be shared to a big screen easily, giving a whole class the opportunity to share in the learning.

A visualiser in the classroom would allow teachers to:

  • project all kinds of text easily - a page of an essay, a picture from a book, a poem, an index...
  • zoom in to key paragraphs, sentences and words from a tet.
  • share 'live' student written work in the classroom - looking at writing together and talking about ways to improve it.
  • celebrate and highlight students' achievements in the lesson by sharing their work with the whole class.
  • model 'live writing', with a teacher's or student's writing being streamed to the whole class
  • model annotation and assessment, with the whole class being able to see a teacher or student annotating a piece of work.
  • capture and record learning, allowing students to have access to it in their independent learning time.
  • and many other very useful things!

How will this benefit students?

  • Good writing skills are fundamental to learning, not just in the English classroom. By building writing skills in English we will have an impact across the school curriculum and across students' lives.
  • classroom visualisers will help to build a conversation in our classrooms about the details of writing, supporting all students in seeing writing as a living process where they can make improvements.
  • they will build student engagement in the classroom.
  • they will reduce the need for photocopying, saving the environment and our paper budget!

stretch target 1

Thank you for your extraordinary generosity! We are amazed and touched by your support. Your pledges will help make so much difference to our students' learning.

We are setting an ambitious new funding target of £4727.

This will allow us to purchase seven new Fujitsu Esprimo Q556/2 Mini PCs for our English classrooms to run our visualisers on. These will replace the existing classroom PCs which are showing their age.

The PCs are available here:

Our network team will then redeploy our current machines elsewhere in the school where they are most needed, ensuring that there are no gaps in provision in our classrooms, library and IT suites.

Stretch Target 2

Wow! We are once again so impressed with everyone's generosity. We have smashed through our stretch goals on Day 2 of the campaign! I've now updated our target to £6364 - this will allow us to buy:

* one more classroom visualiser for our sixth form English classroom.

* wireless Kensington remote 'clickers' so that our English teachers can present without having to hover around the mouse.

* two new projectors to replace ageing equipment and ensure that our students' work can be projected clearly and brightly.
