Newtown Preschool is based in St Helens. The pre-school opens from Monday to Friday term time only, from 7.45am until 5.30pm. We provide funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children. We believe all children are equal and support children with disability and special educational needs. We are situated in a disadvantaged area and so many of our children do not get to experience the use of technology like some of their peers.

What do you want?

We want to buy an interactive white board to develop our children's learning and engagement. We are turning into a technologically advanced society, therefore it is important for the children to develop their skills through technology and gain the skills they require as our society develops. When delivering lessons as a whole class with the children on the carpet, a class of 26+ have to sit around a standard computer screen to look at/watch any visual aids needed to support the children's lesson. An interactive whiteboard would provide us with a bigger screen for all children to see more clearly.

Who is this for?

This is for our preschool room children to help support their learning and development in all areas of the early years foundation stage and to introduce phonics to the children to ensure they are school-ready come September. When children start school in reception all the children will be familiar with working with this technology as all schools use these.

Why do you want it?

Having worked previously with interactive whiteboards and having seen how it can bring children’s learning to the next level, I know this will make a huge impact on the children’s learning. There are many advantages of children working with interactive whiteboards. A few examples are:

  • We all learn in different ways, so while some children are auditory learners, taking in information efficiently through the spoken word, others are visual learners. Interactive whiteboards give people the opportunity to absorb information in multiple formats. This helps increase retention and process information.
  • It’s something that is new and fun to engage the children. With such technology in class, every child will be excited to try and find out how the board works. This can spur the individual’s enthusiasm to get involved in their own learning process using the interactive whiteboards.
  • It provides coverage for every area of learning so through my own planning it can enhance the early years foundation stage curriculum as well as supporting individual needs. So including text, images, audio and video in a presentation allows everyone, including those with learning disabilities, to enjoy the lesson. Another benefit of using interactive whiteboard in the classroom is that it helps children with hearing impairment to benefit from visual presentation. Those unable to see partially or completely can also learn more about a given topic using audio presentation. Hence the use of interactive whiteboards ensures the learning needs of every student are met sufficiently.
  • These interactive whiteboards will not only stimulate learning but will also save on learning materials and inspire performance.
