We’re raising £75,000 to record people’s memories of the NHS and create the first digital archive of them, which will save the history of our NHS.

Who are we ?

NHS at 70 is working to save the history of our NHS by recording people’s memories of healthcare since 1948. Its team of historians and heritage professionals is led by Dr Stephanie Snow at The University of Manchester. Our supporters include the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the NHS, Age UK, the Stroke Association and many other national and local organisations across health and heritage.

You can find out more about the project team here.

Our Story

What are we doing and why?

Help us save the history of the NHS.

NHS at 70 is a national oral history programme working with volunteers across the four nations of the UK to record stories from patients, staff and members of the public.

The stories we record will create the first public Digital Archive of NHS history. Currently there is no NHS museum or shared public space around the history of the NHS. Our Digital Archive is unique and will enable everybody to discover more about the place of the NHS in all our lives for use now and in the future.

Your sponsorship will enable us to support volunteers to record more NHS stories across the UK as well as showcase these stories in an exhibition and film.

Why is this important to us?

The NHS has been part of everyday life in the UK since 1948.

The history of our NHS is the story of our lives in the UK over the past 70 years.

Our most intense human experiences of birth, life, work and death are reflected in NHS history - we all have a NHS story!

Why should it be important to you? What impact will you have by giving money?

The NHS is central to all our lives – whether we have worked for the NHS or been a patient, we all have an NHS story. By sponsoring us you will be giving someone the opportunity to share their story and have their experience listened to and recorded for future generations. Your sponsorship will empower volunteers and interviewers to be part of this history and create opportunities through the exhibition and film for connections and engagement across health communities.

Your sponsorship today will help us record people’s memories of the NHS and create the first digital archive of our NHS history for future generations.

How will your sponsorship be used?

NHS at 70: The Story of Our Lives is supported by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We need to raise £75,000 in match funding to support our ongoing work.

If we hit our target of £75,000, we will spend the money on saving the NHS history that would otherwise be lost. Your sponsorship will support the recording of NHS stories, our Volunteer Programme and engagement activities across the UK. Here is a breakdown of our estimated project costs:

  • Record 500 NHS at 70 oral history interviews: £25,000 (based on an average cost of £500 to support an interview and prepare it for the archive)
  • Train 30 young people in Digital Storytelling skills: £5,000
  • Design, curate and build our 'Moments of Care' exhibition: £10,000
  • Transport the 'Moments of Care' exhibition to ten venues across the UK: £5,000
  • Produce an 'NHS at 70' film: £15,000
  • Maintain and develop the Digital Archive: £15,000

If things really take off and we raise more than our target we’ll use the extra funds to record more NHS stories.

Throughout our crowdfunding campaign, we will update you weekly with news on our fundraising and share new NHS stories we have collected on our website.
