A short summary of THE project

We are a group of master’s Engineering students taking part in the European Space Agency's Fly your thesis! 2019 Parabolic Flight Campaign (Find out more here:ESA Fly Your Thesis!) The first stage of the project is to take part in the Gravity-related Experiments Training Workshop at ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium on 29 Jan - 1 Feb 2019 in order to do this we must raise £2000-£3000 to purchase all the materials necessary to start manufacturing our expeirment.

Who are WE?

The team is composed of 5 members. 3 Aeronautical Engineers (Liam Ardagh, Thomas Critchley and Matteo Pontecorvo) and 2 Mechanical Engineers (Georgie Crewdson and Alex Evans), all studying for a master’s degree.


What are we doing and why?  

The European space agency’s Fly Your thesis Campaign is a once in a life time opportunity to design manufacture and finally test new and innovative space technologies in a micro gravity environment on board an Airbus A310 in November 2019. Only two teams in the whole of Europe have been selected this year to participate in the campaign and it is a huge honour for us to have been selected as one of these two teams! The first step of the journey and in preparation of the parabolic flights, is to take part in the Gravity-related Experiments Training Workshop at ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium on 29 Jan - 1 Feb 2019.

What technology will we be testing? 

The project involves taking a heat management technology – Pulsating Heat Pipes (PHPs) – which has been extensively developed by a team of researchers here at the University of Brighton and scaling it down to explore its feasibility as a nanosatellite-sized solution for future space technologies. PHPs have an appeal as an alternative heat management solution for satellites as their passive hydro-thermal phenomena-based mechanics require no moving parts or pumps to work, significantly reducing the risk of the system failing and requiring maintenance, which is not always possible if the system is in space

Why is this important to us?

Getting selected by the European Space Agency to take part in this project is a huge achievement not only for us as students, as this demonstrates the knowledge and skills of all the team’s members as engineers, but also shows the capabilities that the University of Brighton has in training competent and confident young individuals and prepare them for such exciting and innovative projects.

Why should it be important to be a donor?

The first step of the project is (as mentioned above) is to take part in the Gravity-related Experiments Training Workshop at ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium on 29 Jan - 1 Feb 2019. This inevitably means having a design ready to start manufacturing by the start of 2019. To contribute to this project, no matter how small the donation, would be encouraging and supporting the development of ground-breaking space technologies and supporting the growing field of STEM subjects and academic achievement here in the UK!

Where will the money go?

If the minimum amount of funds is raised, this will enable us to start ordering all the necessary materials needed to manufacture our preliminary design. If more than the minimum amount is raised, we will be able to order more specific technologies necessary for the completion of the design as well as materials for the experimental rack required to hold the experiement. We will post regular updates of the project including trips and how the manufacturing of our experiment is going via our social media platforms to keep you up to date!
