Hi

I am thrilled to have been accepted by the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy to do a certificate course allowing me to become a Play Therapist. Ever since working with refugee children in 2009, I have been inspired to look into being a therapist so that can help children overcome trauma and psychosocial problems. I believe that studying Play Therapy will give me the best tools to achieve this. I am hoping to raise £1845 to help towards paying half of the course fees for the first year. This amount also includes paying necessary memberships, registration fees and books.

What is play therapy?

Many people, especially children, often find it very difficult to express their feelings and problems with words. Play therapy is a form of counselling or psychotherapy that uses play to communicate with children, to prevent or resolve psychosocial challenges. This helps them towards better social integration, growth and development, emotional wellbeing and trauma resolution. A safe, confidential and caring environment is created which allows the child to play. A whole array of play possibilities are presented to the child i.e. sand, water, drawing, playing with puppets etc. The child chooses a form at free will and the communication between the child and therapist can start.

Why am I doing this?

For the last seven years I have been working more exclusively on designing and carrying out theatre based creative projects with children staying on refugee centres in the Netherlands. This can be very challenging work as there is often no common language and the children can be extremely traumatised. I have developed a deep passion and dedication for this type of work. What I desperately miss however are tools that allow me to communicate and create at a level that has a deeper impact on these children. I believe that the play therapy course will enable me to develop these skills and introduce me to new concepts and ways of working. The big dream is to eventually take all my skills and work with children traumatised by war in post war countries or refugee camps around the world.

This video is an example of the work i already undertake with refugee children and adults in the Netherlands. I both directed and produced this interactive family site specific play in July 2016. This project was initiated by the organisation Inspiratie Inc.
