Who are we?

We are the Reading Rocs Quidditch team. Our team members are all current students at the University of Reading. We have started this project as we intend to compete in the Highlander Cup, held in Edinburgh on the 15th March until the 17th. As Quidditch is a relatively new sport to the United Kingdom, we receive no funding from the students' union. As a result of this, we rely entirely upon donations and fundraising to fund all of our activities.

This project is very important to us as a team because this is our chance to take on the best teams in the UK. The Highlander Cup will be the first ever Quidditch tournament for UK teams. By competing in this tournament we will gain more experience as a team and have our chance to show that we can be one of the best teams in the UK.

What exactly is Quidditch?

Quidditch originated in the Harry Potter Books written by JK Rowling. The sport, as we play it, was created in 2005 at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Each team is made up of 7 players on broomsticks: 3 chasers, 2 beaters, 1 keeper and 1 seeker. The chasers work together to get the Quaffle through one of three hoops at the opposite end of the pitch. The beaters throw the Bludgers at the opposing team to make them lose possession and results in the opponent having to run back to their own set of hoops. The keeper defends the hoops. The seeker is responsible for persuing the Snitch, wherever it may go.

Quidditch is a full contact sport played with mixed teams on broomsticks. 1 Quaffle, 3 Bludgers and 1 Snitch are used during the game. The Snitch is carried by the Snitch Runner, who can run off the pitch, play tricks on the players and generally cause mayhem.

There are over 300 teams in the USA and already 20 in the UK. Quidditch is flourishing as a sport with many, both young and old, jumping at the chance to pick up a broom and play.

The Funds Breakdown

We require funding because we receive no funds from the students' union. We have been fundraising ourselves but it would be impossible for us to raise the funds needed without outside help.

We will be spending the funds on:

  • transport  for the team from Reading to Edinburgh

  • accommodation in Edinburgh for 2 nights

  • repairs to equipment

  • replacement equipment

The Team

Reading Rocs was formed in October 2012 but already it has been an active force in the lives of its members and those in the community. There has been a big emphasis to introduce and spread Quidditch as a sport that can be part of the Legacy of the Olympics in the UK, for future generations of both sports and Harry Potter fans. The video gives just a glimpse of what the Team has been doing and how it has impacted its members and numerous communities nationwide.

Quidditch is only small at present but we hope that one day it will grow to be a recognised sport. We want to play our part to make this happen, but we need your help to get us there. Please sponsor us today!

We're really grateful for your donations and support. We'd really appreciate it if you could share our page to anyone who might be interested in helping our team.

Thank you very much,

the Reading Rocs
