I am raising £2000 to cover the cost of shipping books generously donated by The University of Manchester Library to the library of the University of Mosul.

Who Am I?

My name is Makram Alkhaled, I am a PhD student at the University of Manchester. I am originally form Mosul, which is the second largest city in Iraq after the capital, Baghdad.

destruction of libraries in iraq

In 2017, the Iraqi security forces, with the support of the international coalition, liberated the city of Mosul from ISIS fighters who had taken over the city in June 2014. During the 3 years of ISIS control, ISIS fighters devastated most of the libraries in the city, including the central library of the University of Mosul. They destroyed and burnt books and valuable manuscripts which were housed in these libraries. The university library was targeted by an air strike which then demolished the building and its remaining collections.

Rebuilding the mosul university library

Rebuilding the libraries and filling them with books is one of the most significant and symbolic forms of the civil rebuilding of Mosul.

Several campaigns have been launched to collect books in all disciplines and in all languages.

As a Mosulian and as one of the University of Mosul's graduates, I feel that it is my duty to participate in the rebuilding process of the city and its libraries, especially as I am planning to return to my home city with my family once I finish my PhD. So, I contacted the Library of The University of Manchester and asked if they can help me by donating books to the the University of Mosul. I was amazed to find out that the team at the Library have around 2500 books for donation.

how you can help

Rebuilding the libraries in Iraq and replenishing them with books and manuscripts will revive the city and its university, and bring life back to the educational institutions which were devastated during the last 3 years.

Shipping 2500 books to Iraq, and transporting them to Mosul is going to be an expensive task that I can't cover by myself. Your donation will allow me to buy packaging materials, and engage a specialist shipping firm who can ensure the books arrive safely at their destination.

The packaging and loading of the books will be done by a team of volunteers. This lovely team will mostly consist of my PhD colleagues here at The University of Manchester. The process of receiving the delivery and unloading will be done by some of the academics from the University of Mosul who volunteered for this mission. We hope to also get some help from an active Non-Governmental Organisation in Mosul.

Help Me succeed!

Please give generously to support this important cause. It would also mean a lot to students and academics in Mosul if you could please share this project with anyone you think would support us – on social media, or by any other means.
