Rivington Foundation Primary is a small mixed-aged class primary school in Lancashire. We have 115 students on roll.
What do you want?
We want to replace our existing, very old, laptops that now do not work, and replace them with new, unified models!
Who is this for?
All of our children, from Reception to Year 6, will be able to use the laptops.
I love our school - it's really special but we struggle as a small school, with limited funds, to provide our children with everything they deserve. I have been working at Rivington for 15 years and in that time have had a keen interest in developments in English and Maths. The use of additional laptops within the school would assist with promoting and accelerating progress in Maths, Reading and Writing as well as opening a wealth of opportunities for skills and knowledge development across the curriculum.
Rivington is in a very rural area. This brings its own unique challenges around managing school resources and supporting children to exceed expectations. At the present time we are running with a limited number of aged laptops which are very often, due to their temperamental nature, unable to support a mixed-aged class with a least one laptop between two students.
Due to funding, our children have a limited access to technology - in our school we have no dedicated digital area or mobile laptop trolley, we have around 16 laptops to share between four classes. Regardless of our efforts, the teaching of high quality computing is limited by lack of additional equipment and experience in the subject. In an attempt to resolve this and to provide children with a high quality computing curriculum, we would are attempting to source a larger number of laptops. The aim of this project is to provide access to additional, previously unavailable, resources to deliver an enriching experience, engaging both teachers and pupils alike.
Why do we want it?
Technology is increasingly filtering into our everyday lives and we want to prepare our pupils for a world of life and work that will undoubtedly be full of technology. Our mission is to provide the pupils with a variety of experiences across multiple platforms to equip them with transferable skills that they can utilise across the curriculum and life.
By providing more devices we can ensure that pupils can work individually, as well as in pairs/groups, to develop their skills and access the wealth of information and resources that are constantly growing on the internet. By having devices available we'll be providing opportunities for pupils to make learning their own, in the ways that suit them. For example, if they find a particular area interesting, they will be able to research this further to expand their knowledge and answer more complex questions.
Teachers will be able to plan more exciting lessons, and ultimately engage and inspire pupils to want to pursue a love and knowledge of all things computing. More and more jobs in the future rely on children having digital literacy skills - we can ensure children have these and are ready for the next stage of their education by equipping them with this expertise.
We have a growing number of children with a Special Educational Need and access to laptops will enable them to engage with learning in a more visual way, helping them to make better progress. All children can also learn functional life skills that will equip them to be more independent in their adult life.
