Help the SAE Snowmobile Team compete

Our Mission

The mission of the UMBC Snowmobile SAE is to engage students through the use of engineering and scientific practices, hands on applications, interdisciplinary collaborations and exciting projects to supplement the knowledge and experience gained in the classroom and build a top of the line, competition ready snowmobile.

about the team

We are a group of students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County who modify a stock snowmobile to make it more effective, environmentally friendly, and overall better. The vehicle is modified based on students' areas of interest and all of the research, design, analysis, and testing is done by students. All of our hard work builds up to the annual SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, an international competition where student teams from different universities compete. Members on the team strive to learn information and methods of application outside of a typical classroom setting while working in an interdisciplinary  real world setting. Although our technical goal is to succeed at the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge, as an organization we strive to engage students, to provide a setting for academic advancement, and most of all to engage students with similar interest in a fun and exciting setting.

About the Competition

The SAE International Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC) is an engineering design competition for collegiate Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) teams. The CSC challenges students through the re-engineering of an existing snowmobile. The teams use their modified snowmobiles to compete in a variety of events to provide smiliar tests to those seen in industry. The tests challenge the improvement of: emission, noise, fuel economy/endurance, acceleration, handling, static display, cold start and design presentation. What sets of CSC apart from other collegiate SAE competitions are the annual changes to the rules, making each competition difference from the previous. By varying competition rules, the CSC ensures that students explore different aspects of automotive practices, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the vehicle. The CSC is primarily an engine competition with an underlying theme of clean engineering.

Our budget

We are planning on representing UMBC at the Clean Snowmobile Competition. As a first year team, that is a very lofty goal. Our competition will take place from March 5-10 in Houghton Michigan. Being the southernmost team in our competition, we a very long way to get there. All the funds raised from this campaign will go to subsidizing:

  • Truck rental to transport our snowmobile
  • Gas for both team cars and our truck
  • Lodging cost for approximately 15 members attending

If we are able to get additional funding, it will be allocated to team gear.

Why donate?

This is our team's first year and as a new club we need capital to be successful. We have over 25 highly dedicated members who are doing research, attending weekly meetings, and going to seminars to learn how to design, create, and analyze parts by following the engineering design process. However, all of this hard work and dedication will not end to us being successful at competition if we don't have the resources to apply our knowledge.

By sponsoring our club through a monetary donation, you will be helping our students become better scientists and engineers.

If you are part of a company or coorportation and decide to donate, we will work hard to get you publicity and get your name known not only within our club, but also within our university and competition.

We have different levels of sponsorship based on donation amounts so make sure to look at our donation levels to see what level of publicity we are able to give you based on your donation.

Keep up with our progress!
