make me a social worker!

Hello! My name is Tara Hughes – an aspiring Humanitarian!

Earlier this year I made a successful application to The University of Birmingham for the MA Social Work programme. This course explores in more depth the areas of research that I found most fascinating during my undergraduate degree in Health and Social care, which I did with The Open University.

Unfortunately, I have no money and I have been unable to secure any grants or bursaries -funding opportunities for graduates are extremely limited these days. I am affected by the recent changes in university funding. Tuition fees have tripled, maintenance loans scrapped; and being from a lower income household makes university financially difficult for me.

Crowdfunding my tuition fees wasn't the first option that sprung to mind when I was contemplating how on earth, am I going to be able to afford uni? But with my financial situation being difficult it’s become a popular option for me; the chance to leave uni debt free! Who could ask for more!

Here is a break-down of costs:

To study a Master’s Qualification with Birmingham City University costs £14850

Towards tuition fees a bursary will pay £8104

This leaves me with an outstanding amount of £6746

£6746 is the minimum amount I am trying to raise.

£14850 is the maximum amount I require.

If I don’t get recommended for a bursary, I don’t feel I can borrow any more money- I’m already over £20k debt from my undergraduate degree.

I have to confirm that I would like to take up my place and pay for my tuition fees upfront by 30th May. So, my ‘minimum needed’ is £6746.

Ultimately, my goal is work as a fully qualified Social Worker with individuals who are trying to cope with issues in everyday lives. This is my last step to reaching that goal. I hope that kind people who believe I will make a positive difference in my career will be generous enough to contribute in some way towards my financial goal.

The story is...

I grew up as a council estate kid, and I have seen how children are neglected and abused while living in households with dysfunctional families. Children are shouted at, emotionally abused, physically and sexually abused. They have to watch their mother and fathers intoxicated so much they don’t know whether they are asleep or dead, until they urinate on themselves within their deep intoxicated sleep. There are children that wake up every morning to the smell of stale alcohol, used needles, vomit on the floors or a house full of strange people. Children are seeing their mothers beaten up by their fathers, or the other way around. Children are scared, left crying at night with no one to speak to, wishing to grow up and be out of this hell. Charities such as NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics) offer a helpline for children to call, but it’s just not enough! Children in the past have suffered, and children in the present are still suffering today!

These children grow up to be adults and lead dysfunctional lives themselves, with their own set of dysfunctional personality traits. By the age of 15 they are vulnerable and being sexually abused, by the age of 17 they are on drugs. By the age of 20 they are in debt, homeless and depressed. Everyday of their lives they are depressed, their heart is breaking, and they don’t know why? By the age of 30 they may have managed to overcome their dysfunctionalities and gained control over their lives, or they may be dead because nobody cared enough to help them. Their families abandoned them, the schools failed to support the naughty child, and social services we never made aware. But if they were, then the child’s parents would have been told that they can’t behave the way they do with their children, and all this suffering could be prevented.

If you could look upon the world the way I’ve seen it, you would cry a tear at all the suffering.

Make me a Social Worker and donate to this cause, let me be the one to get out there and help these parents, help me to save those children from any more harm.

Where will the money go?

• If I hit the minimum target this will cover the tuition fees .

• If I hit the maximum and also offered a bursary, I will advise the university to offer the bursary to somebody else on the course who wasn’t previously selected for it (creating one more social worker to make a difference).

• Any extra funds will be donated to the charity NACOA (National Association for Children of Alcoholics).
