In January 2017, SOAS announced six undergraduate and one postgraduate scholarship for displaced people. The scholarships cover tuition fees but they do not cover living costs. Student Finance England recommends that a student living in London needs £11,000 per year to be able to support themselves. Displaced people cannot access Student Finance so the only way these students will be able to take their places at university is through financial support. So far thousands of pounds have been raised but to ensure the scholarships are sustainable, but we need to keep going.
As part of the 2018 appeal, a group of students will undertake a sponsored cycle from London to Brighton. This is a 84.94 km journey. All the money raised from the cycle will go directly to the SOAS Sanctuary Scholarship Fund.
We are a group of students at SOAS from the Solidarity with Refugees and Displaced People society. We believe in equality of access to education. In the absence of government support we have seen the need to raise the money ourselves.
