About us

We are Takeley Primary School, based in Essex.  We are a two form entry school that is beginning to grow its Computing curriculum.  As the Computing Coordinator, I try to bring computing into as many aspects of the curriculum as possible and we have had some quite exciting projects.  These projects have so far been unfunded so just imagine what we could do with funding!

Who is this for?

The Drone project would benefit the whole school in many aspects of the school curriculum.  Children of all ages would be able to access the learning and benefit from the inspirational lessons created with the help of the drone.

Why do we want it?

As a teacher it is becoming harder and harder to inspire children based on CGI films, computer games and television in general.  A drone within a school can help to create inspirational lessons to engage all children.  Ideas for lessons could cover all of the curriculum, not just computing.

Computing is of course an obvious aspect of learning. Children can design code to program the drone to follow set paths.  Children as young as 4 can decide whether the drone goes backwards or forwards, up and down or left and right.  Children in Year 6 can create a series of instructions to control the drone along a course finding the shortest route possible.

In English, teachers can fly the drone in different locations or on school trips and the footage can be used for descriptive writing.  Images of the school can be taken from angles the children have never seen before then conversations can be started about what they see and where it could be.

In Maths, graphs can be plotted with time on the x axis and distance on the Y.  Images can be taken of the school from above and used in geometry lesson, looking at shapes and angles.

In science, scientific inquiry could be started about the effect the weather has on the drone or the forces that help it fly or pull it back to earth.

In Art, children could create a huge piece of art on the playground or on the fields and then the drone could film it from above.

The possibilities are only restricted by imagination.

If we're fortunate enough to raise more than our target, then we would also like to buy a new iPhone to use with the drone. We do have a iPhone that we can use, but it is getting old and a little tired!
