Around We Go

We have recently moved into a new school building but have lost some fixed play equipment (monkey bars/play frames) during the build as it was too old to be moved and re-built safely. The children were very upset about this and have asked us to transform the new grounds. With support from our PTA we have been able to install a playframe for the youngest children in school, but there we would like to provide more physically challenging activities for the children.

West Twyford Primary School

We are a 'Good' School (Ofsted, 2013) where every child is valued and is encouraged to become the best that they can be - in lessons, through their behaviour and in the contribution they make to the school community and beyond.

We have a rich, vibrant and multi-cultural community whose aim is Achieving Together. 76% of our pupils have English as an Additional Language, 21% attract Pupil Premium Funding and we provide additional support to 18% of our children with Special Educational Needs (January 2016).

More About West Twyford

1. Our local area: We are surrounded by 3 areas that fall within 30% of the most financially deprived nationally. Families from this area come to our school and use the adjacent Community and Children's Centre. In Ealing, child poverty is 21.6% and is worse than the England average (ChiMat 2015). This impacts children's daily lives: families struggle to provide activities for their children outside of school and few opportunities to raise aspirations. This can affect health also: in Ealing, child obesity is worse than the England average (Public Health Profiles 2015).

2. Our geography: The school sits in the north of the Hanger Hill ward of Ealing. We are cut off by two major roads, A40 and North Circular, and next to us is one of the largest industrial estates in London. There are very few shops and amenities in the local area. There are very few open spaces - and limited play equipment for young children.

3. Our children: Pupils make excellent progress at West Twyford as we all work to 'achieve together'.  However we have identified a developmental gap between boys and girls in school in the early years. This is observed in gross motor skills, communication skills and problem solving. Also there is a trend that as they get older, the children spend less time being active.

4. Our future: We are an expanding school (2 form entry by 2018). Increasing numbers creates pressures to provide more equipment that will enrich extra-curricular activities: the project will provide endless creative, physical and imaginative options.

Our Supernova Dream

The funding will be used to buy and install a Supernova spinning wheel.  A single child can engage in exploring its possibilities, but together with a whole group of children, this play item expresses its real potential. The large, slanting ring is set in motion by the children. Turning, spinning, balancing or just enjoying the ride.  It offers challenges in balance and strength and promotes physical development and co-ordination.
